Around Arenal Observatory Lodge

It's a good day because bites we got from small black flies in Rincon de la Vielja park have finally stopped itching.

Out early on a complimentary guided walk along the lodge trails. Saw howler monkey ( or at least its tail) high up in the canopy, then four different types of toucan ( according to our guide - we were hard pressed to distinguish between them).

The guide explained that the area had been a macadamia plantation but the climate was wrong so the trees were replaced by pines for telegraph poles. Unfortunately there were 26 reasons why these were unsuitable too, each one a species of woodpecker!

Over a hanging bridge, past a waterfall to a farm from where we rode back to the lodge on a specially constructed trailer pulled by a tractor. Great fun!

Low cloud most of the day, and temperatures in the low 20s.

In the afternoon we hiked most of the remaining trails, seeing family groups of coatis and an agouti along the way.

We detoured as we returned to take advantage of the beautifully constructed hot spa pool and soaked for a long time after all the walking.
