To Lake Arenal

Stocked up on bread and tea at the local shops, filled up with petrol and headed for Tilaran. It was lucky we weren't planning to use the road we came in on because for some reason it was closed today.

After about 25 kilometers of dirt road through rolling pastureland we found tarmaced roads again. We searched the end of scenic lake Arenal for a suitable picnic stop, but there wasn't even a public car park, so we headed for the hotel.

The Agua Inn and Spa is shown on the map as situated at the lakeside. We followed the coordinates given and ended up on a dead end track with even the locals unable to help. Eventually a helpful police car stopped and we followed them for a time, but then they headed out of town.

Even phoning the hotel left us little wiser as we were still expecting the map to be correct. Eventually some nice ladies drew a new map for us and we discovered that the hotel was nowhere near either the town or the lake.

The owner says that the GPS is unreliable. I think they deliberately show the hotel in a more favourable location than it actually is. Whichever, it took us an hour to find it, not because it is hard to find but because it isn't in the place it is shown on the maps.

The hotel is more of a b&b, prettily designed and set in beautifully kept grounds but with very basic rooms. This is the new Costa Rica.

Next door is the old Costa Rica.
