Going up in the world - the road to Monteverde

Leaving Borinquen, we retraced our route back to the supermarket and petrol station at Liberia where we restocked on provisions again.

Then southwards on the InterAmerican highway for about 20 kilometers where we were pleased to be able to find the turning to the Catarata Llanos de Cortez. This was a fabulous lunch spot where a waterfall fell into a sandy plunge pool with shady trees around where family groups were picnicking.

A long boring stretch of road followed, mostly restricted to 60 km/hr, but eventually we turned off and started climbing. The road became unpaved again and the scenery ever grander. Sometimes we looked over the Gulf of Nicoya to almost all of the peninsula beyond, other times down steep valley sides to a backdrop of mountains.

Once we came across a lorry that had shed it's load in the road but luckily not blocked it, once an exuberant motorcyclist flew out of a side road ahead, lost control and almost slid into us. Finally we reached Monteverde and a comfortable room at the Historias Lodge, some 1400 metres above sea level.
