Last day in Tortuguero

Woken early by howler monkeys, nature's alarm clocks in these parts.

Today we had planned just to do a guided jungle walk with Ever, Jeff's Nicaraguan assistant, but he was too busy in the morning.

That was because they had accidentally overbooked the cabins ( Jeff blamed his wife in her absence), and Ever had to clean all the cabins. We were asked if we minded moving into the village for the night. We didn't mind a bit because that meant a bug free room with a hot shower and we would be at the right place to catch the boat the next day!

After packing, we set off in borrowed wellys and a good spray of deet along the swampy jungle trails.

We saw a couple of impressive butterflies and a spider monkey hanging by his prehensile tail and swinging the sapling he was on until he could launch himself through the air to the next tree, which he missed. He crashed through the foliage only regaining a handhold at a lower level.

After lunch we went round pretty much the same trails with Ever and a couple of Italian ladies. Apart from catching a fleeting glimpse of a land crab in one of the multitude of holes that they make in the ground, we saw little. Ever was very entertaining however, knowing more than he could explain having been brought up in the jungle.

Then we went across the river to the village with Jeff who had arranged our night at the newest hotel on the island, the Sunset Rooms. It is very well appointed and situated at the far end of the village.

We found a perfect waterside stop for a beer at the Buddha Café, somewhat pricey but made up for by the location, then a beautiful meal of battered fresh shrimp at Tutti's restaurant. Thoroughly recommendable. Another good day.
